What is the difference between flame retardant and inherently flame resistant fabric?
Inherently flame resistant fabrics, such as aramids, have flame resistance built into the fibre that will not wash out. Treated flame-retardant fabrics are ordinary cotton or blends given a chemical finish that can diminish over many washes. Both can meet EN ISO 11612 or EN 14116. For long service and frequent laundering, inherent FR usually lasts longer. We can advise either.
Which standards apply to flame retardant clothing?
Flame retardant workwear is commonly tested to EN ISO 11612 for heat and flame or EN 14116 for limited flame spread, with EN 14116 giving index codes 1 to 3. For electrical work add EN 61482 arc ratings. Choose the standard that matches your hazard, whether general flame, heat or arc. Ask us for the exact conformity codes on each garment.
Where is flame retardant clothing required?
FR clothing suits oil and gas, petrochemical, welding, foundry and electrical work where flash fire, sparks, molten splash or arc are possible. It reduces burn injury by resisting ignition and self-extinguishing when the flame source is removed. Match the FR rating to the specific hazard and avoid meltable synthetics underneath. How should flame retardant garments be washed to keep protection?
Follow the maker's care label: wash FR garments in warm, not hot, water without bleach, fabric softener or starch, as these can coat fibres or leave flammable residue. Keep garments clean of oil and grease, which are flammable. Inherent FR resists wash loss better than treated fabric. We can supply care guidance and certification documents with bulk FR orders.
