What arc rating in cal/cm2 do I need for an arc flash suit?
Your required arc rating comes from an arc flash study giving the incident energy in cal/cm2 at the working distance; the suit's ATPV or EBT rating must equal or exceed it. Common PPE categories under NFPA 70E are roughly 4, 8, 25 and 40 cal/cm2. Never guess. Share your incident energy results and we will match a suitably rated suit.
Which standards apply to arc flash protective clothing?
Arc flash garments are tested to EN 61482, which reports ATPV or EBT ratings in cal/cm2, and are used within an NFPA 70E electrical safety programme. The fabric must also be inherently flame resistant. Ratings apply to the full ensemble including hood, gloves and face shield. Ask us for the EN 61482 arc rating on each item before ordering.
Does an arc flash suit cover the whole body?
For higher incident energy, use a complete arc-rated ensemble: coverall or jacket and trousers, an arc-rated hood or face shield, balaclava, gloves and appropriate footwear, all rated at or above the calculated cal/cm2. Any unprotected area or lower-rated item becomes the weak point. Layering can raise system rating. We supply complete arc flash kits matched to your task.
Can an arc flash suit be reused after an arc event?
Inspect any garment exposed to an arc event; if it shows charring, holes, melting or hardened fabric it must be retired, as protection is compromised. Undamaged arc-rated clothing can be laundered per the maker's instructions, which preserve the flame-resistant properties. Avoid bleach and fabric softeners. We supply arc flash suits for regular rotation and provide EN 61482 documents on request.
