What is the difference between a single-gas and a multi-gas detector?

A single-gas detector monitors one hazard, such as hydrogen sulphide, carbon monoxide or oxygen, while a multi-gas detector monitors several gases at once, typically combustible LEL, oxygen and two toxic gases. Choose single-gas for a specific known risk and multi-gas for confined-space entry or mixed atmospheres where several hazards may occur together.

What do LEL, percent volume and PPM mean on a gas detector?

LEL, or lower explosive limit, is shown as a percentage and warns of flammable gas approaching an explosive concentration. Percent volume measures gas as a proportion of the atmosphere, often used for oxygen. PPM, parts per million, measures low concentrations of toxic gases. Alarm set points are configured against occupational exposure and explosive limits.

Do gas detectors need bump testing and calibration?

Yes. A bump test applies a known gas to confirm the sensor responds and alarms activate, and should be done frequently, often before each day's use.
