Above Neck PPE

Above-neck PPE covers head, eye, face, ear and respiratory protection worn on or around the head. It is required wherever workers face falling objects, flying particles, splashes, noise or airborne contaminants. Under India's Factories Act, employers must provide suitable protective equipment based on a documented workplace hazard assessment for each task.

Start with a hazard assessment covering impact, particles, chemicals, noise and dust exposure. Match each hazard to a rated product: helmets to IS 2925, eyewear to IS 5983, hearing protectors to IS 6229 and respirators to IS 9473. Confirm the items are compatible so a helmet, visor and earmuff can be worn together without gaps.

Different items follow different Indian Standards: IS 2925 for industrial helmets, IS 5983 for eye protectors, IS 6229 for hearing protection and IS 9473 for respirators. Many products also carry EN or ANSI markings for export use. Buyers can request BIS or test certificates for any listed product to verify compliance before bulk purchase.

Above-neck PPE degrades with UV, sweat, impact and general wear, reducing protection even when it looks intact. Helmet shells and harnesses, scratched lenses, hardened ear cushions and clogged respirator filters all lose performance. Follow each manufacturer's replacement interval, inspect items before every shift, and retire any item after a significant impact or contamination.
