What is a vertical fall arrest system?

A vertical fall arrest system protects workers climbing ladders, masts, towers and chimneys. A guided fall arrester (EN 353) travels on a fixed rigid rail (EN 353-1) or a tensioned flexible cable or rope (EN 353-2) fitted to the structure. It follows the climber and locks instantly if they fall, limiting the fall distance.

What is the difference between EN 353-1 and EN 353-2 systems?

EN 353-1 covers guided fall arresters on a rigid anchor line, such as a fixed ladder rail, giving a very short arrest distance. EN 353-2 covers guided fall arresters on a flexible anchor line, such as a tensioned cable or rope, which allows more movement but a slightly longer fall. Both keep the climber attached throughout the climb.

Can any harness point be used with a vertical fall arrester?

Use the front (sternal) attachment point on the harness, which is designed for ladder climbing and keeps the climber upright and close to the guided arrester. The dorsal point is acceptable where the manufacturer allows, but the sternal connection reduces fall distance and eases a controlled arrest. Always follow the system's compatibility instructions.

How is a vertical fall arrest system inspected?

Check the guided arrester and anchor line before each climb for smooth travel, correct locking, cable tension and corrosion, and confirm the arrester matches the line. A competent person must inspect the installed system at least annually and keep records. Withdraw any guided fall arrester that has arrested a fall or fails its lock test.
