What is the difference between a rescue device and a descent device?

A descent device (EN 341) lowers one or more people from height at a controlled speed, useful for evacuation and self-rescue. A rescue device (EN 1496) can additionally lift a casualty, for example to unload a jammed fall arrester before lowering. Some units combine both functions. Choose based on whether you must raise, lower, or both.

Which standards cover rescue and descent devices?

Descent devices are certified to EN 341, rescue lifting devices to EN 1496, and rescue harnesses and loops to EN 1497 and EN 1498. Devices are rated for a maximum descent height, load and sometimes total energy for repeated use. Buyers can request certification documents and datasheets to match a device to their rescue plan.

When would I use an automatic controlled descent device?

Use an automatic controlled descender for emergency evacuation from towers, wind turbines, cranes and high structures, or to lower a casualty after a fall. It regulates descent speed automatically, so even an untrained casualty can reach the ground safely. For confined-space recovery, choose a rescue winch device that can also lift the worker.

How are rescue and descent devices maintained?

These devices need a pre-use function check, a thorough examination by a competent person at least annually, and periodic manufacturer servicing of internal brakes and ropes. Keep the rope clean, dry and undamaged, and store the device ready for immediate use. Withdraw any unit with a worn rope, sluggish braking or after a shock load.
